An important goal every person should strive for, which was a big focus during Global History II, is to recognize and appreciate differences in others. I am not one to hold grudges against people for their beliefs because I understand everyone has their own opinions that shape their views. Around the time of the Presidential election, there was a lot of tension in the US about if Donald Trump would be a good president for the US public. When we got assigned the debate about this question, I didn't go straight to a side because honestly I didn't know much about Trump's policies, just you either loved or hated him. I was assigned to the side of the debate that was saying Trump would be a good president. Here I learned about his policies and plans for the country for the next four years, which I find beneficial because he is the president now. Then when the debate concluded in an epic fail, I changed sides to write my paper about how Trump would not be a good president. Seeing both sides of the argument in detail allowed me to recognize people's differences in opinions when it came to this subject and be considerate of their views.

I chose these two documents to show that I researched both sides of this debate about Trump and appreciate the differences of opinions the people of our country have, which is a freedom we often take for granted. My decision to switch sides of the debate is mostly related to the fact that I felt I could not counter anything the "anti" Trump side said during the debate. While during this time of stress, when I felt like the biggest failure in something I'd done, I was quick to switch sides. Looking back on it, I think it was beneficial for me to understand both sides of the argument that way I can make a fully educated decision about my views.
A lot of times when people are so wrapped up in their opinion, they are closed minded to the fact that everyone has different beliefs. This extreme is dangerous as it creates ignorance instead of understanding. While you don't have to agree with everything other people say, you have to recognize their differences as valid and appreciate the fact that people can believe whatever they chose. This idea is something I learned throughout history this year. I learned to appreciate differences in the cultures we were learning about, and the differences in the beliefs and views of my classmates. A positive way we showed our views was through discussion boards, in which we could post our opinion and respectfully respond to others in our class, whether we agreed or disagreed. This skill, that I wish to always improve on, of appreciating differences is important in the real world because it not only increases people's respect of you, but increases your respect of others.
